“Order up!”

I flew myself over to the serving counter giving Jackie a wink and placing the food down at my next table. The days after Christmas blurred together like the ocean horizon on a rainy, California day. I didn’t know where one day began and one day ended. Mother called incessantly after I told her about my break up with Robbie. She still couldn’t understand how I can throw away my future like that. Even when I told her I wasn’t in love with him she waved me off. “Love isn’t everything, Jo. He is a good man and will be a good husband to you.” I know where she was coming from. She really did only want what her mother and father didn’t have but she still didn’t realize that I didn’t need Robbie to have a future.

I hadn’t seen Kelsey for over a week. Between my shifts at the café and her shifts and interviews for the Fetal Surgery fellowship we were unable to find time to get together. Although I thought about her constantly and my body ached to be near her physically, I knew it was a good way for me to digest to see what was clearly happening between us.

I wanted Kelsey, of course I did. Physically, emotionally, I needed her in every sense of the word. But as the days passed and I found myself not seeing her my mind started to wander. What would happen if I couldn’t find a way out of running the business? Would Kelsey move to Georgia with me? How would mother deal with the fact I was in a relationship with Kelsey? Would she really throw the business away or would daddy wear himself down until he was dead just because their daughter was gay? What if I said I didn’t want it and lived happily ever after with Kelsey in California.

What if there is no happily ever after.

I sighed as I bent over the breakfast bar. The initial breakfast rush was finally over and I gazed down at a crossword puzzle, not even paying attention to anything in front of me.

A manila envelope being placed over the puzzle broke my chain of thought and I glanced up to awaiting azure eyes.

“Hi,” my smile widened as Kelsey’s beautiful face fell into view.

“Hi ya, Jo.” She glanced down to the envelope and then back up to me.

I squinted my eyes at her, “what is this?” I said as I picked up the folder. She didn’t respond as an application slid out. I read it quickly and then shook my head.

“Just thought I’d drop this off, you know just in case.” She winked at me and as she started to back up. “I gotta get back but I’m off at five and I have a craving for something spicy. Are you free?”

I scrunched my nose at her. “Um, yeah I am but…I have to be honest and tell you I don’t really like Thai.” I thought about backtracking my statement as I envisioned Kelsey moaning at the taste of the food but even my own hunger got in the way.
